As we know, generations pass. Here is the story behind this photo; a special moment between a grandmother and granddaughter. The granddaughter’s mother knew the time had come for grandmother to go live in a facility. Mother called me the day before grandmother went into the facility. She had the presence of mind to ask me to photograph her family, with grandmother.
During the photo shoot, I was able to snag this photograph of grandmother and granddaughter embracing. The real impact of this moment became apparent just a few short months later, because grandmother passed away. When I delivered the 22”x 28” glass print of this photo to the family, the granddaughter broke down and said “that was the last time that I hugged my grandmother like that”. Watching the family’s tearful emotions as they looked at the portrait, I realized that photography isn’t about the gear or the technology, its about artfully capturing a feeling and a connection. That moment solidified for me how important photography is for families. That photo will hang on the granddaughter’s wall for the rest of her life. It was an overwhelming and moving experience. I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything.
